Slow Burn Rape and revenge (Soft Target Series)

Slow Burn Rape and revenge (Soft Target Series)by Conrad JonesGerricon Books

:
Reader's Choice Review The cover and start of this book is slightly deceiving as the main thrust of the story has very little to do with religious terrorism (which I have noticed tends to put some readers off) but is in fact to do with bullying, rape, abuse and revenge. Jones has produced a superb book that is fast paced and keeps you thoroughly interested despite knowing the who and having the why built up throughout rather than finding it all out at the end. The characters are lacking a little depth but Jones focuses his attention and that of the reader on the events that have led them to their present situation (both for the attackers and the attacked) which builds the reader's distaste as well as the anticipation of the finale. Some readers will connect with the characters better than others depending on their own experiences and personally I can understand if not condone the actions of the brothers to a certain extent. Although there were certain parts of the story that were a little predictable in the lead up, I didn't think this detracted from the story or the enjoyment of the book at all. And the final chapters were very unexpected which gave the story a superb ending and leaves you feeling very satisfied. The writing itself is vivid and descriptive, placing the reader right in the middle of the action, feeling everything the characters do without going over the top or drowning the story in unnecessary information. The shorter chapters allow for faster reading, thus adding to the overall pace and feel of the story. Overall this is a superb read and I cannot wait to read more by Conrad Jones.

Reviewed By Josee Morgan Official Apex Reviews Rating: When a bomb explodes in a van parked outside the first mosque ever built in the UK, local police immediately suspect that it’s a racially-motivated attack carried out by local right-wing extremists...however, as Detective Superintendent Alec Ramsey’s investigation deepens, he uncovers a simmering feud between two families that goes back decades at the center of the attacks...soon, Ramsey finds himself struggling to bring the real killers to justice as the looming shadow of international political influence begins to render his efforts increasingly in vain... Slow Burn is a dynamic suspense thriller. In his standout seventh offering, prolific author Conrad Jones skillfully interweaves global political intrigue with family drama and tragedy to craft a taut, action-packed tale of the perils of succumbing to the dangerous throes of vengeance. Coming in at just over 300 pages, Slow Burn reads like a novel less than half its size as Burns masterfully strings together compelling characters and intersecting plotlines to forge a fast- paced, edge-of-your-seat read sure to grip the reader in breathtaking suspense with the turn of each new page. A highly recommended instant classic from a proven literary talent.

The Winter's Tale (Charnwood Soft Cover)

by William ShakespeareUlverscroft Large Print Books

John Dover Wilson's New Shakespeare, published between 1921 and 1966, became the classic Cambridge edition of Shakespeare's plays and poems until the 1980s. The series, long since out-of-print, is now reissued. Each work is available both individually and in a set, and each contains a lengthy and lively introduction, main text, and substantial notes and glossary printed at the back. The edition, which began with The Tempest and ended with The Sonnets, put into practice the techniques and theories that had evolved under the 'New Bibliography'. Remarkably by today's standards, although it took the best part of half a century to produce, the New Shakespeare involved only a small band of editors besides Dover Wilson himself. As the volumes took shape, many of Dover Wilson's textual methods acquired general acceptance and became an established part of later editorial practice, for example in the Arden and New Cambridge Shakespeares.

Soft Target: A Thriller

Soft Target: A Thrillerby Stephen HunterSimon & Schuster

Black Friday America’s largest shopping mall Suburban Minneapolis 3:00 P.M.

Ten thousand people jam the aisles, the corridors, the elevators, and the escalators of America, the Mall—a giant Rubik’s Cube of a structure with its own amusement park located in the spacious center atrium. Of those people, nine thousand nine hundred and eighty-eight have come to shop. The other twelve have come to kill.

Stephen Hunter’s hyper-drive, eighth-gear new thriller, Soft Target, chronicles the day when the unthinkable happens: twelve gunmen open fire in the mall corridors, driving the pack before them. Those on the upper floors take cover or get out any way they can; but within a few minutes the gunmen have herded more than a thousand hostages into the amusement park.

Ray Cruz, one of the heroes of Hunter’s last bestseller, Dead Zero, is in the mall with his fiancée and her family. The retired Marine sniper thought he was done with stalking and killing—but among the trapped thousands, he’s the only one with a plan and the guts to confront the self-proclaimed “Brigade Mumbai.” Now all he needs is a gun.

FBI Sniper Dave McElroy has a gun. But positioned on the roof of the vast building, looking down through one of its thickly paned Great Lakes–shaped skylights, and without explosives or fuses—or the go-ahead from his superiors—he is effectively cut off from his targets and forced into the role of witness to the horror unfolding below.

Set during the four hours of the terrifying event, the story follows both hostages and gunmen, detailing the complex strategic police response, the full-press media saturation coverage, even the politics of SWAT as both the Minnesota State Police and the FBI struggle to control, confront, and ultimately defuse the crisis.

Having learned the lessons of Columbine, the feds believe that immediate action is the only solution. But Douglas Obobo, the charismatic and ambitious commandant of the state police, orders cooperation, tolerance, communication, and empathy for the gunmen. He feels that with his superior negotiating skills, he can make contact with the shooters and gently nudge them into surrender. But what if their goal all along has been unparalleled massacre—and they’re only waiting for prime time?

With unrelenting suspense and vivid scenes of violence and chaos in the center of a terror-crazed afternoon in Middle America, thriller master Stephen Hunter takes us into the belly of the softest of soft targets.
